Double helical gears are more difficult to produce than spur gears or single helical gears due to their more complex shape \u2014 and, consequently, they are more expensive than spur gears. Why Double Helical Gears Are Harder to Produce<\/strong><\/p>\n

A double helical gear requires two separate tooth-cutting operations \u2014 one for each hand of helix \u2014 with the central groove between the two tooth sets providing the runout space for the cutting tool. The groove width and position must be precisely controlled to ensure the two tooth sets are correctly phased relative to each other. If the relative angular phase between the left and right tooth sets is incorrect, the gear will not run quietly despite correct individual tooth profiles \u2014 the load transfer at the hand changeover point will be uneven, generating additional dynamic load and noise at the mesh frequency.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Generative Method and Hobbing Limitations<\/strong><\/p>\n

Double helical gears can be processed by the generative method (gear hobbing). However, hobbing cannot process all herringbone gear configurations \u2014 particularly configurations where the central groove is too narrow to allow the hobbing cutter to exit without fouling the opposite tooth set. For these configurations, gear milling with formed cutters is used, accepting the slightly lower accuracy that milling produces compared with hobbing.
