Exceptional Wear Resistance

UHMW-PE has outstanding abrasion resistance — its wear rate under sliding contact is 2–7× lower than nylon, POM, or HDPE at equivalent loads and speeds. The very high molecular weight (3–9 million g/mol, vs 250,000 for standard HDPE) produces a material with polymer chain entanglement so high that individual chains cannot be pulled out of the surface under abrasive contact — the fundamental mechanism of UHMW-PE's superior wear resistance. Ultra-Low Friction — Self-Lubricating

UHMW-PE has the lowest friction coefficient of any unreinforced thermoplastic — μ ≈ 0.04–0.08 against steel chain links. This near-PTFE friction level provides excellent self-lubrication of the chain-sprocket interface, eliminating the need for chain lubricant in many food, pharmaceutical, and clean applications. The smooth, waxy surface finish of UHMW-PE naturally reduces the sliding friction at each chain link engagement, reducing chain elongation from link wear and extending chain service life alongside the sprocket.

Near-Zero Water Absorption

UHMW-PE absorbs less than 0.01% water — effectively zero. In food processing environments where sprockets are repeatedly exposed to high-pressure water washing (CIP — Clean In Place — systems using hot water and detergent), UHMW-PE sprocket wheels maintain their dimensional accuracy and tooth profile without the swelling that causes nylon sprockets to misalign with the chain pitch after washing cycles.
