Large metal internal ring gears can be used as segment gears by cutting — dividing the full-circle ring gear into arc sections (segments) of 60°, 90°, 120°, or custom angles. This capability is particularly valuable for two application types:

Installations Where Full-Ring Mounting Is Impossible

In some machinery retrofits or replacements, the ring gear's mounting location is not accessible for a full-ring installation — a bearing, shaft collar, or structural member blocks the insertion path. By cutting the ring gear into two or three segments, it can be installed around the obstruction and bolted together with precision alignment features. Ring Gears Too Large to Ship as Single Piece

Very large ring gears (above approximately 800 mm OD for sea freight; above 400 mm for air/express) may exceed the practical dimensional limits of international shipping containers or air freight pallets in their full-circle form. Cutting the ring gear into 3 or 4 segments reduces the maximum dimension from the full OD to approximately 60–70% of the OD, making the segments shippable in standard packaging. The segments are precision-marked and match-bored at the joint faces for assembly alignment at the installation site.

Partial Arc Engagement Applications

Some mechanism designs require only a partial arc of internal gear teeth — a sector ring gear that engages the pinion over a limited angular range corresponding to the mechanism's working stroke. For example, a windscreen wiper drive mechanism may use a 120° sector internal gear; an automotive seat recline mechanism may use a 90° sector ring gear.
