Gear Rack and Pinions — Product Overview

gear rack product image

Ever-Power cremagliera e pignone sets are precision-matched linear actuator pairs that convert rotating shaft motion into controlled linear displacement. A rack and pinion set comprises two elements: the rack — a straight or profiled bar with teeth cut along one face — and the pinion, a small cylindrical gear that meshes with the rack. When the pinion is rotated by a motor or by hand, its engagement with the rack teeth translates that rotation into exact linear motion at a rate determined by the pinion pitch circle diameter and tooth count.

Supplying rack and pinion as a matched set — rather than sourcing rack and pinion separately — guarantees that module, pressure angle, helix angle (for helical variants), and tooth quality grade are consistent between the two mating components. Ever-Power rolls every matched set on a gear testing machine before dispatch; the measured backlash and contact pattern are recorded against the order reference so that any field query can be traced back to the specific pair.

With 20 years of gear rack manufacturing experience, Ever-Power produces rack and pinion sets in round and rectangular cross-section rack profiles, steel, stainless steel, brass, and engineering plastic materials, and in modules M3 through M12 as standard — with M1, M1.5, M2, and custom non-standard modules available to order. Both spur (straight-tooth) and helical tooth forms are available. OEM drawings accepted in DXF, DWG, STEP, and PDF formats.

How Gear Rack and Pinion Works

A gear rack and pinion is a linear actuator in its simplest form. The pinion gear is mounted on a shaft driven by a motor or hand wheel. As the pinion rotates, its teeth engage the rack teeth one by one, advancing the rack linearly by exactly one pitch per tooth engagement. The linear velocity of the rack equals the pitch-circle circumference of the pinion multiplied by the rotational speed in revolutions per second.

Two configurations are used in practice. In the fixed-rack / travelling-pinion arrangement, the rack is bolted to the machine base and the pinion — together with its motor and gearhead — travels along the rack. This is the standard for CNC gantries, robotic seventh-axis tracks, and portal cranes. In the fixed-pinion / travelling-rack arrangement, the pinion is fixed in the housing and the rack passes through it, delivering linear motion at the rack end. This is the configuration used in steering gear boxes, bench presses, and linear actuators.

Rack and Pinion vs Ball Screw

For strokes above 2 m or forces above 5 kN, rack and pinion is more practical and cost-effective than a ball screw. The rack has unlimited stroke length — sections are simply butted — while a ball screw is limited by critical speed and deflection. The rack is highly efficient (95-99%) and easy to maintain. The ball screw offers lower backlash at short strokes and high positioning accuracy but becomes impractical and costly as stroke increases.

Custom Rack Design Factors

Custom rack and pinion design is governed by drive force, speed-versus-time cycle, axis bearing friction, and external loads on the axis. Three accuracy metrics must also be addressed: backlash (clearance between tooth flanks), pitch deviation (difference between theoretical and actual rack length), and tooth quality grade (accuracy of manufactured tooth flanks). All three affect positioning accuracy and noise level of the completed rack and pinion set.

Matched Set Advantage

Sourcing rack and pinion from the same manufacturer guarantees module and pressure angle consistency. Ever-Power rolls every matched set on a gear testing machine and photographs the contact pattern before dispatch. If a field issue arises, the roll-test record allows the root cause to be identified quickly — worn contact at a specific position indicates a mounting problem rather than a manufacturing defect, saving time and cost at commissioning.

Applications of Gear Rack and Pinion Sets

⚙ Automatic Control Machines

CNC routers, laser cutters, plasma cutting gantries, and automated assembly lines rely on rack and pinion sets for their X and Y travel axes. The linear actuator principle gives these machines unlimited stroke at high traverse speeds unachievable with ball screws at equivalent cost.

🔌 Semiconductor Industry

Wafer handling systems, probe stations, and semiconductor inspection equipment use precision rack and pinion sets in stainless steel or aluminium with DIN6-7 accuracy. Low particulate generation and cleanroom-compatible surface finishes are specified for these applications.

💉 Medical Equipment

Patient positioning tables, surgical robots, and diagnostic imaging linear axes use stainless steel rack and pinion sets with passivated or electropolished surfaces. Quiet, smooth motion at low speeds and precise positioning are the primary requirements in this sector.

☀ Solar Energy Equipment

Single- and dual-axis solar tracker systems use rack and pinion drives for panel tilt and azimuth positioning. Outdoor corrosion resistance is critical; hot-dip galvanized or stainless steel racks with sealed pinion housings are specified for 20-year service life in tracker installations.

🔩 Machine Tools

Large planer mills, vertical boring machines, and gantry-type machining centres use heavy-module (M6-M12) alloy steel rack and pinion sets for their travel axes. Carburized and induction-hardened teeth at HRC 58-62 surface hardness withstand the continuous high-load duty cycles of metalcutting operations.

🚘 Automated Parking Systems

Multi-storey automated car park pallets and car carriers use M4-M8 rack and pinion sets for vertical and horizontal transfer. The drive must handle peak shock loads during vehicle loading and repeated daily cycles over a 15-year design life — through-hardened alloy steel sets satisfy both requirements.

Custom Gear Rack and Pinion Manufacturing

CNC Rack Milling

CNC rack milling machines cut teeth continuously up to 2,000 mm per section; longer racks through repositioning. All racks are milled and matched for continuous travel and drilled or tapped to customer mounting hole patterns.

Material Range

Mild steel, carbon steel, alloy steel, stainless steel, aluminium, brass, bronze, and engineering plastics in rectangular, square, and round cross-sections. Bevel-form, double-sided, and cylindrical rack profiles are also available.

Post-Process Options

CNC machining centres perform drilling, tapping, and counter-boring. Racks are hardened, plated, coated, blasted, polished, or passivated per specification. Flame hardening for large-module racks is available for very heavy-duty applications.

Reverse Engineering

Send us a damaged or worn gear rack and pinion. Our technical team measures module, pressure angle, tooth count, face width, and mounting geometry using optical projection and CMM equipment, then produces a replacement set to the reverse-engineered specification.
