Double Helical Gear Design and Processing

Double helical gears are more difficult to produce than spur gears or single helical gears due to their more complex shape — and, consequently, they are more expensive than spur gears. The manufacturing complexity and the engineering value they provide are directly linked: the same geometric features that make them difficult to produce are what give them their performance advantages.
Why Double Helical Gears Are Harder to Produce
A double helical gear requires two separate tooth-cutting operations — one for each hand of helix — with the central groove between the two tooth sets providing the runout space for the cutting tool. Double helical gears can be processed by the generative method (gear hobbing).
