Worm Gear Design Fundamentals for Custom Sets

When designing a customised worm gear set, the following parameters must be specified or calculated to define the gear set completely. Korea Ever-Power's engineering team guides customers through this specification process:
Module (m)
The module determines the scale of the gear teeth — larger module means larger, stronger teeth and higher torque capacity, but also a larger and heavier gear set. The module must be the same for the worm and worm wheel. For custom worm gear sets, the module is selected based on the required output torque and the available centre distance envelope.
Worm Thread Starts (Z1)
The number of worm thread starts determines the efficiency and self-locking characteristics. Single-start (Z1=1): lowest efficiency (40–60%), highest lead angle allows self-locking, highest achievable ratio. Multi-start (Z1=2, 3, 4): higher efficiency (70–90%), larger lead angle reduces or eliminates self-locking, lower ratio per wheel tooth count. The lead angle λ = arctan(Z1 × m / d1) is the key parameter connecting starts, module, and pitch diameter.
Worm Wheel Teeth (Z2) and Ratio
Transmission ratio i = Z2 / Z1. For 20:1 with Z1=1: Z2=20. For 20:1 with Z1=2: Z2=40. For 60:1 with Z1=1: Z2=60.
