At this size, the gear blank alone weighs several tonnes and requires large-format machining equipment for all production stages: turning, hobbing or milling, heat treatment, and finish machining. The production process for each gear is defined by the specific module, material, and accuracy requirement on the customer's drawing — there is no standard process that applies to all double helical gear configurations.
Hobbing vs Milling — Process Selection
Double helical gears can be produced by gear hobbing (generative method, higher accuracy, limited to configurations where the central groove is wide enough for cutter exit) or gear milling with formed cutters (more flexible regarding groove width, slightly lower accuracy). Korea Ever-Power selects the process based on the specific geometry of the customer's drawing. For double helical gears where the central groove is too narrow for hobbing — which is the common situation in designs where face width has been maximised to increase load capacity — gear milling with form cutters is the correct and more common method.
