Bevel Gears for Agricultural Machinery:
PTO Drives, Gearboxes and Combine Harvesters

Agricultural machinery uses bevel gears in nearly every power transmission application requiring a change of shaft direction — from tractor PTO angle gearboxes to combine harvester header drives, mower conditioner right-angle gearboxes, and seeder distribution drives. This guide covers bevel gear material selection, duty cycle design, shock loading service factors, and maintenance requirements for the full range of agricultural bevel gear applications.

PTO INPUT SPEED

540 / 1,000 RPM

Two standard tractor PTO output speeds: 540 RPM (older implements, light duty), 1,000 RPM (modern implements, higher power). European standard ISO 500. Gear ratios in the bevel gearbox set the final output speed

SHOCK SERVICE FACTOR

1.5 – 3.0

Agricultural implement bevel gears experience severe intermittent shock loads — rock strikes in mowers and tillers, crop plugging in harvesters, and hydraulic pressure surges — requiring high service factors vs steady industrial drives

MODULE RANGE

M4 – M10

Agricultural bevel gear module range. Light implements: M4–M6. Medium tractor implements: M6–M8. Heavy combine harvester and large PTO bevel gears: M8–M10

ANNUAL DUTY

200–800 h/yr

Agricultural machinery seasonal use — much lower annual operating hours than industrial drives, but concentrated in short seasons with high-intensity shock loading and limited maintenance attention between seasons

Bevel Gears in Agricultural Power Transmission

Agricultural machinery relies on bevel gears to redirect power from the tractor PTO shaft (rotating at 540 or 1,000 RPM on a longitudinal axis) to the driven implement components which almost always require transverse or perpendicular shaft arrangements — cutter blades rotating on horizontal or vertical transverse axes, spreader discs on vertical shafts, header augers on horizontal shafts perpendicular to the direction of travel. The 90° bevel gear right-angle drive is the standard solution for every one of these direction changes, and agricultural machinery uses more bevel gears per machine than almost any other equipment category.

Korea Ever-Power’s bevel gears for agricultural machinery cover straight bevel gears (M4–M10, for the large majority of agricultural PTO implement applications where speed is moderate and noise is not a concern) and spiral bevel gears (for high-speed or high-power agricultural drives where the noise and load capacity advantages justify the additional cost). Materials range from C45 induction hardened (light-duty seasonal implements) through 20CrMnTi case carburized (heavy combines, large PTO gearboxes) to ductile iron (large-diameter slow-speed bevel gears where casting vs machining reduces cost).

The most important design difference between agricultural and industrial bevel gears is the service factor. Agricultural machinery operates in short seasons with unavoidable shock loading — a mower bevel gearbox hitting a concealed stone at operating speed produces a torsional shock 5–10× the normal running torque. A combine harvester header drive bevel gear experiences severe impact every time a heavily cropped row plugs the intake. These shock events dominate the fatigue life of agricultural bevel gears and require service factors of 1.5–3.0 rather than the 1.0–1.25 used for smooth industrial drives.

C45 Induction Hardened

Standard for light and medium agricultural implement bevel gears — rotary mower right-angle gearboxes, fertiliser spreader drives, small seeders and cultivators. HRC 48–54 tooth surface, good impact resistance from the unhardened core. Annual replacement is economically practical and often specified as a maintenance item for high-wear implements, making lower first cost more important than maximum fatigue life. Korea Ever-Power keeps C45 induction-hardened agricultural bevel gears in standard sizes in stock for fast replacement supply.

20CrMnTi Case Carburized

For heavy-duty agricultural bevel gears in combine harvester header drives, large PTO angle gearboxes above 100 kW, and tractor front axle bevel drive sets. Case depth 0.8–1.2 mm, HRC 58–62 tooth surface, ductile core absorbs shock loading. Service life 3–5 seasons at full operating duty vs 1 season for C45 alternatives in heavy combine applications. Korea Ever-Power supplies 20CrMnTi agricultural bevel gear sets for combine header drive gearbox replacement and OEM supply to European and North American agricultural OEM programmes.

SCM420H / SAE 8620

Preferred by European and North American combine and tractor OEMs who specify international steel grades rather than Chinese GB grades. Functionally equivalent to 20CrMnTi for agricultural bevel gear duty. Case carburized, HRC 58–62. Korea Ever-Power manufactures agricultural bevel gears in SCM420H and SAE 8620 for OEM programmes requiring JASO or SAE material certification rather than GB/T material standards — common for supply into John Deere, CNH, AGCO, and Claas tier-1 supplier qualification programmes.

ROTARY MOWER
& CONDITIONER

Bevel gear specification: M4–M7, C45 induction hardened or 20CrMnTi, straight bevel, ratio 1:1 to 2:1, 90° shaft angle, service factor 2.0–2.5. The rotary mower right-angle gearbox is the highest-volume agricultural bevel gear application worldwide. The bevel gear set must absorb the full energy of a cutter blade impacting a rock or heavy soil obstruction — a single rock strike at rated blade speed can produce a peak torque 8–12× the normal running torque. Slip clutches or shear bolts are fitted upstream of the bevel gearbox to limit this peak, but the bevel gears must still absorb the residual shock after the clutch trips. Korea Ever-Power supplies matched bevel gear sets for all standard mower gearboxes including replacement for Comer, Bondioli&Pavesi, Walterscheid, and Brevini mower gearbox models.

APP 02

COMBINE
HARVESTER HEADER

Bevel gear specification: M6–M10, 20CrMnTi or SCM420H case carburized, straight or spiral bevel, ratio 1:1 to 3:1, input from header drive shaft at 1,000 RPM PTO derivative speed, service factor 2.0–3.0. Combine harvester header drive bevel gearboxes power the cutting platform auger, reel, and knife drives simultaneously. Header plugging events — when heavy wet crop blocks the intake — create peak torques that must be absorbed by the bevel gear without tooth fracture. The seasonal nature of combine harvesting (600–1,000 hours maximum per year) means gear replacement between seasons is commercially acceptable; the key requirement is reliable completion of each harvesting season without field failure. Korea Ever-Power supplies bevel gear sets for all major combine header gearbox series including John Deere, Case IH, New Holland, Claas Lexion, and AGCO Gleaner models.

ROTARY TILLER
& CULTIVATOR

Bevel gear specification: M5–M8, C45 induction hardened or 20CrMnTi, straight bevel, service factor 2.5–3.0, centre bevel gearbox plus side bevel output gearboxes. The rotary tiller (rotavator) has the most severe shock loading duty of any PTO-driven implement — every pass through stony soil produces multiple rock-strike events, each generating torsional peaks several times the rated torque. Rotary tiller bevel gears are among the highest-wear agricultural gear components and are routinely replaced as a scheduled service item at the start of each cultivation season. The centre gearbox bevel gear set (receiving full PTO power and distributing to the rotor shaft) is the highest-loaded position; the side output bevel gears (redirecting rotor shaft power to the tiller tine shafts) are subject to the highest frequency of individual shock events per hour of operation.

APP 04

SEEDER &
SPREADER DRIVES

Bevel gear specification: M4–M6, C45 normalised or induction hardened, straight bevel, ratio 1:1 to 4:1, service factor 1.5 (smooth spreading duty). Precision seeders and fertiliser spreaders use smaller bevel gears than mowers and tillers — the seed metering mechanisms and spinner discs are low-torque applications driven from PTO at reduced speed through the bevel gearbox. The service factor for spreader bevel gear drives is lower than for impact-type implements because fertiliser and seed do not produce rock-strike shock loads. Stainless steel or hot-dip galvanised cast iron housings are specified for corrosive fertiliser environments. Korea Ever-Power supplies plastic bevel gears in POM and nylon for small precision seeder distribution drives below 0.5 kW where corrosion resistance and self-lubrication are priorities over load capacity.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q 01

How often should I replace the bevel gear set in a rotary mower gearbox, and what are the wear signs to watch for?

Rotary mower bevel gear replacement interval depends on operating conditions: (1) Light duty (grass, no stones): inspect after each season, replace every 3–5 seasons or when wear signs appear. (2) Heavy duty (rough grass, stones, stubble): inspect mid-season, replace every 1–2 seasons as a planned maintenance item — the cost of a field gear failure (emergency call-out, harvesting delay) far exceeds the cost of preventive gear replacement. Wear signs to watch for: (a) Increased backlash — rock the blade by hand with the gearbox static; more than 2–3° of free rotation before the wheel engages the pinion indicates worn tooth flanks; (b) Metallic particles in the gear oil (check oil colour and particle content at each season-end service); (c) Gear oil temperature above 80°C in operation (indicates excessive friction from worn tooth surfaces); (d) Noise — a new low-frequency rumble in addition to normal mowing sound typically indicates onset of tooth pitting or bevel gear bearing wear. Korea Ever-Power supplies seasonal replacement bevel gear sets for all common mower gearbox models with agricultural season service stock available for immediate dispatch.

Q 02

Can Korea Ever-Power supply bevel gears to fit existing Comer, Walterscheid, or Bondioli&Pavesi agricultural gearboxes?

Yes — Korea Ever-Power regularly supplies agricultural bevel gear replacement sets cross-referenced to Comer (Italy), Walterscheid (Germany/USA), Bondioli&Pavesi (Italy), Reggiana Riduttori, and Chinese-origin agricultural gearboxes. The cross-reference process: customer provides the gearbox model number (from the gearbox nameplate or the implement manual) and Korea Ever-Power identifies the correct bevel gear set from the reference database. If the model number is unavailable, provide the measurements: module (or OD and tooth count for calculation), cone distance, shaft angle (90° for most PTO gearboxes), bore, keyway, and helix hand (left or right, for spiral bevel). Lead time for standard cross-referenced agricultural bevel gear sets: 7–15 days. For rare or obsolete models: 20–35 days from measurement confirmation. Agricultural season emergency stock for common mower and tiller gearbox bevel sets is maintained year-round for rapid dispatch to all major agricultural markets including Australia, UK, Netherlands, Germany, France, and North America.

Q 03

What lubrication is correct for a PTO implement bevel gearbox?

Most PTO implement right-angle bevel gearboxes use SAE 80W-90 GL-4 or GL-5 gear oil — check the implement manual for the specific specification, as some agricultural gearbox manufacturers prohibit GL-5 EP oil in gearboxes containing yellow metal (bronze or brass) thrust washers or bushings (GL-5 EP additives can attack copper alloys). Typical fill quantities: small mower gearbox 0.15–0.30 litres; medium tiller gearbox 0.3–0.8 litres; large PTO gearbox 0.5–1.5 litres. Check oil level before each season and after any rock-strike event that caused temporary stop — impact events can froth the oil and partially push it out through the breather. Drain and refill with fresh oil after every 200–300 operating hours or at the end of the season, whichever comes first. Use food-grade oil (NSF H1 SAE 80W-90) for bevel gearboxes on vegetable crop implements where oil leakage risk could contact food produce.
